Chapter 6
Qin Guanyu placed a delivery order for stomach medicine. He watched as Shen Qianci curled up on the sofa, burying his face into a pillow without making a single sound. There was no telling whether he was gripping through the pain or had passed out.
The doorbell rang twice in succession. Each time, Qin Guanyu thought the medicine had arrived. However, the first ring was the hourly cleaning helper coming in to tidy up, and the second was the property management delivering the cat litter box and cat bed.
Qin Guanyu ran his hands through his hair in sheer frustration. “If I’d known, I would have gone myself. The pharmacy is right inside the residential compound. How can it be this slow?”
Hearing this, Shen Qianci shifted slightly, revealing a pair of eyes to look at him. “I thought overbearing CEOs always kept stomach medicine stocked at home.”
Qin Guanyu let out a sigh. “That’s the CEOs in overbearing CEO novels. I’m not that fragile.”
Just then, the medicine arrived. Stepping into his slippers, Qin Guanyu hurriedly brought it inside and, with immense attentiveness, personally mixed the soluble powder for Shen Qianci.
As the bitter scent of the medicine wafted through the room, Qin Guanyu carefully helped Shen Qianci up. Without a second thought, he held the cup right up to the man’s mouth to feed him. Shen Qianci naturally leaned in and drank the medicine right from his hand.
Qin Guanyu let out a small sigh of relief. It was only when he tossed the paper cup into the trash that it suddenly hit him what he had just done.
Just now… hadn’t they been a bit too intimate?
He turned around stiffly, only to find that Shen Qianci didn’t seem to care at all. At the moment, he was clutching a pillow with a frown, resting with his eyes closed.
Looking at that face, which had turned several shades paler, Qin Guanyu’s guilt and self-reproach surged right back up. He sat down on the edge of the sofa, nudged Shen Qianci’s arm, and asked meekly: “Teacher Shen, I didn’t eat my fill at dinner. I want to cook some noodles. Do you want some too?”
Shen Qianci opened his eyes, his voice sounding a bit drained of energy: “You actually know how to cook noodles? Instant noodles?”
Qin Guanyu glared at him in mock offense. “My family runs a food company, alright? Plus, I used to be an international student!”
“Don’t wealthy international students cross the ocean with a personal chef in tow?”
“That was supposed to be my original plan.” Qin Guanyu showed a hint of melancholy. “But at that time, I turned into a student abroad who didn’t have much money. You could even say I was penniless.”
With that, he quickly snapped out of his gloomy reminiscing and asked Shen Qianci, “Are you feeling any better? Do you have an appetite?”
Seeing how eager the CEO looked, Shen Qianci felt a bit curious about his culinary skills. “Then why don’t you make a bowl for me too?”
The moment those words left his mouth, Shen Qianci noticed Qin Guanyu let out a quiet sigh of relief, as if a weight had been lifted from his chest.
—
Shen Qianci lay on his side on the sofa. In less than fifteen minutes, a savory aroma wafted over from the kitchen.
Steam Bun responded even faster, leaping off the sofa with a whoosh and darting straight into the kitchen.
Through the haze, Shen Qianci faintly saw Qin Guanyu bend down to pick up the cat, and then the sound of footsteps headed his way.
“Teacher Shen, time to eat.”
Shen Qianci made a move to sit up.
“Hiss—”
“What’s wrong?” Startled, Qin Guanyu immediately set Steam Bun aside and rushed forward to support Shen Qianci. “Does it still hurt that bad? Did the medicine not work at all?”
Shen Qianci rested his forehead against Qin Guanyu’s arm. “How long has it been since I took it? It’s not a miracle drug.”
Qin Guanyu pursed his lips and helped him over to the dining table.
On the table sat two bowls of steaming hot noodles, topped with several slices of braised beef and a braised egg cut perfectly in half.
“It looks so appetizing.” Like a little cat, Shen Qianci showed a look of pure satisfaction the moment he caught the scent. “Did you braise the beef and eggs yourself too?”
Qin Guanyu sat across from him, tilting his proud head high. In a noble and aloof tone, he replied, “Of course.”
Once they started eating, Qin Guanyu quietly observed Shen Qianci. He noticed that Teacher Shen ate quite slowly and elegantly, but it was clear this bowl of noodles had won his favor.
With every bite Teacher Shen took, his eyes would crinkle with contentment, a subtle little expression that Qin Guanyu caught entirely.
With his cooking skills validated, President Qin was over the moon. “What kind of dishes do you usually like to eat? I’ll have the cooking auntie prepare things according to your taste from now on.”
Unexpectedly, Shen Qianci’s hand holding the chopsticks suddenly froze. When he looked up, there was a touch of cautious hesitation in his eyes.
“Just keep it to Shu Yi’s tastes.”
Qin Guanyu froze, lowering his head like a primary schooler who had done something wrong.
“B-but… didn’t you get a stomachache precisely because you couldn’t handle spicy food?”
Shen Qianci lowered his gaze and silently set his chopsticks down. “I’m sorry.”
“?” Qin Guanyu was baffled. “No… what are you apologizing for?”
Shen Qianci said, “You brought me here to be a substitute, but I can’t even stomach the food that Shu Yi loves.”
“Teacher Shen, did the chili burn your brain cells?” Qin Guanyu’s temples throbbed. “Your health comes first. If you can’t eat it, don’t eat it. I’m not a sadist.”
He failed to control his volume for a second, causing Shen Qianci to flinch slightly. Feeling guilty, Qin Guanyu immediately softened his tone. “Today was my fault. I apologize to you.”
Shen Qianci shook his head understandingly. “It’s fine. A substitute is never as good as the real thing after all…”
“Oh heaven, please shut up, Teacher Shen.”
Qin Guanyu couldn’t stand seeing him like this. He was the one in the wrong here. Why on earth should Shen Qianci be bowing and scraping to apologize?!
He picked up the chopsticks and stuffed them back into Shen Qianci’s hand, practically coaxing him: “Hurry up and eat. Once you’re full, it won’t hurt anymore.”
Shen Qianci looked up at him. “Can I really just order the dishes I like?”
This was the first time Qin Guanyu had seen him make such an expression. He looked as obedient as a cat waiting to be stroked.
Little President Qin felt he was incredibly weak-willed; just one look, and his heart instantly melted into a puddle of mush.
“Really, really,” Qin Guanyu sighed softly. “Teacher Shen, I’m not a ruthless exploiter, nor am I a sadist. Please don’t ever do what you did today again; otherwise, how am I supposed to maintain my reputation in the sugar daddy circle?”
—
After finishing the noodles, Shen Qianci lay on the sofa to rest. Qin Guanyu sat on the rug, reviewing a proposal for the summer new arrivals that Sun Guanqing had sent him half an hour ago.
As the clock ticked into the next day, Qin Guanyu looked up from the proposal and found that Shen Qianci had already fallen asleep. Steam Bun was curled up on his stomach, eyes closed as well.
Qin Guanyu stood up, placing his hands on his hips as he looked at the man and the cat. He felt both helpless and amused.
He had initially worried that he would have nothing to do on the first day the substitute agreement took effect, but he hadn’t expected it to be this chaotic.
He leaned down to inspect Shen Qianci’s complexion and noticed it looked much rosier; it seemed his stomach had stopped hurting.
Seeing that the man’s breathing was steady and he was fast asleep, Qin Guanyu wrestled with his thoughts for a long time. Ultimately, he couldn’t bear to wake him up. He gently moved Steam Bun to the cat bed, then turned back to carefully support Shen Qianci’s shoulders and the backs of his knees, lifting him up gently to carry him into the guest bedroom.
He tucked Shen Qianci in with a thin blanket and moved Steam Bun’s cat bed inside as well, just in case the cat woke up and couldn’t find his dad.
Having finished all of this, Qin Guanyu stretched, preparing to head back to his own bedroom to sleep.
Just as he reached the door, the draft from the air conditioner swept across his back. His footsteps halted, and he turned right back around to Shen Qianci’s bedside.
He remembered Shen Qianci mentioning earlier that he had a bad back. People with bad backs shouldn’t get caught in the rain or exposed to cold air. Qin Guanyu had no choice but to re-tuck the blanket around his waist and turn the air conditioner up a few degrees.
Seeing the man stir unconsciously while he was adjusting the blanket, he couldn’t help but chuckle softly. “Go to sleep, fragile little Shen.”
As Qin Guanyu closed the guest bedroom door, he didn’t notice that the “fragile little Shen” had secretly curled his lips into a smile the moment his back was turned.
