When the three arrived in the capital, they first stayed at a hotel, then looked for housing. Fu Yuhan also had to make extra trips to the hospital to keep Qin Xiaolu company. They spent a chaotic week.
When Fu Yuhan arrived at the hospital, he learned that He Yan hadn’t been seeing her daughter recently. Uncle Qin was running between the hospital and the rental, somewhat overwhelmed. So Fu Yuhan naturally took over caring for Qin Xiaolu, agreeing to watch her for a few days.
Qin Xiaolu was recovering fairly well and would be able to leave the hospital in a few days.
Her mood had been good lately. The doctor said the stable condition might also have emotional factors and suggested the family take her out more often, just coming back for regular checkups.
Actually Fu Yuhan was quite busy, but fortunately Qin Xiaolu wasn’t picky—she’d spent little time at home since childhood and hadn’t seen much of the world, so everything looked fresh to her. Thus when looking for housing, they had an extra “little tail” behind them, touching this and looking at that.
–
When Fu Yuhan washed his hands and came back, he saw Qin Xiaolu bouncing up and down a few times on the just-assembled “ins Nordic-style rental small apartment foldable fabric sofa bed.” The soft fluffy hair on her head swayed with her movements, and her round, lively eyes looked over: “Gege, are you going to live here from now on?”
Maybe.
Fu Yuhan thought about it, walked over to press her shoulders, and made her get down from the sofa: “Don’t do strenuous exercise.”
Qin Xiaolu stuck out her tongue and dejectedly got down to put on her shoes.
Fang Wanjing had temporarily received a call from her lawyer and had to leave today. Since Qin Xiaolu was still asleep this morning and didn’t get up, Fu Yuhan had to stay home to clean while Wen Yu went with her to the airport to see her off. They’d decided on the house two days ago—two bedrooms, one living room, simple decoration. Small furniture had to be added themselves. The advantage was that the new small apartment could be signed for a long lease and was close to school. Originally Fang Wanjing had planned to stay two more days, waiting until the purchased items arrived so she could clean everything for them before going home. Who knew plans couldn’t keep up with changes?
But life was originally composed of many instances of “plans not keeping up with changes.” There was nothing wrong with that.
Everyone would grow up through the unexpected.
“Gege might live here for a few years, or might live at school. Haven’t decided yet.” Fu Yuhan sat down, had her sit on the sofa, and after thinking, asked: “Do you not want to go home?”
Being discharged meant she might have to go back.
Qin Xiaolu looked at him nervously, her eyes wide.
Seeing she didn’t answer, Fu Yuhan took it as tacit agreement and asked again: “Is there anywhere you want to go?”
Qin Xiaolu shook her head, then nodded, saying quietly: “Anywhere is fine.”
Actually she didn’t know what delicious food or fun places were waiting for her in unknown locations.
Fu Yuhan reached out to pat her head: “I understand. I’ll communicate with Uncle Qin.”
“Gege,” Qin Xiaolu grabbed his hand. “Will you come home in the future?”
Fu Yuhan froze.
“Can I hug you now?”
Fu Yuhan’s eyes shifted slightly, his expression somewhat dazed: “Yes.”
Having received permission, Qin Xiaolu slid down from the sofa, walked in front of Fu Yuhan, and reached out to hug him.
The little girl wasn’t in good health and was malnourished. Standing on the ground, she was about as tall as Fu Yuhan sitting. Her body was very soft, her embrace warm, and though her heartbeat was weak, it was always there.
“You look happier than before now, gege.” The little girl said very quietly. “But I feel like I’m going to lose you.”
Fu Yuhan was slightly stunned, then his gaze softened. One hand circled to her back and rubbed the hair on the back of her head.
“How could that be,” he said with a light laugh. “This is growing up, Xiao Lu. After growing up, we might be very far apart, might not be able to see each other often. I have my things, and you have places you want to go, but gege will always be your gege.”
“Really?”
“Mm.”
“You can’t break your promise.”
“I won’t.”
“Then…” Qin Xiaolu released him, widened her eyes, and asked anxiously yet expectantly: “Can you buy me a piece of candy?”
“…” Fu Yuhan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “What candy did you see?”
“At that supermarket we went to yesterday, there was one this big…” She gestured with her hands. “Colorful candy with a bunch of characters I couldn’t read on it.”
“But we’re about to have lunch.” Fu Yuhan said.
Qin Xiaolu immediately looked aggrieved, gazing at him pitifully.
Fu Yuhan: “…”
What was he supposed to do when a little girl acted cute?
He couldn’t deny her.
Fu Yuhan’s gaze lowered as he sighed silently: “But we have to wait for Wen Yu gege to come back, and gege has to bring in the sheets and covers that were hung out to dry yesterday first… Also, you have to eat first. You can’t eat candy without eating a meal.”
Qin Xiaolu still looked at him pitifully.
Fu Yuhan rubbed her head and stood up: “I’ll take you after lunch.”
Those eyes immediately lit up.
It was just past 11:30, not yet noon. Calculating the time, Wen Yu should be back soon. He walked toward the room to find his phone, planning to send Wen Yu a message asking where he was. In that instant, he seemed to suddenly realize why Wen Yu liked rubbing his hair.
Because I look cute?
The moment this thought appeared in his mind, Fu Yuhan snorted with laughter.
What a joke. Even the Nine Heavens Divine Thunder wasn’t as ridiculous as this idea.
Wen Yu sent back a message saying he was already on his way. Fu Yuhan changed the sheets and covers he’d brought in, threw the blanket they’d temporarily used as a sheet last night into the washing machine, walked back to call Wen Yu, saying Xiao Lu wanted to go to the supermarket to buy candy.
“Then you guys come out first? Let’s just meet at the mall.” Wen Yu said on the phone. “We can have lunch around there… Can Xiao Lu eat seafood?”
“Better not.”
“Then we’ll find something else. Anyway, you guys come out first?”
“Mm.” Fu Yuhan’s gaze swept to the bedroom, then looked at Qin Xiaolu playing with the game console in the living room. He walked a few steps toward the balcony and lowered his voice. “If you get there first…”
Wen Yu: “Hm?”
“We don’t have any at home.” Fu Yuhan lowered his eyes, pressing his lips together. “I don’t want to buy them in front of Xiao Lu. If you get there first, buy two boxes and keep them.”
“…”
The other end of the phone was silent for three seconds, then Wen Yu burst out laughing: “Damn.”
“What are you laughing at,” Fu Yuhan was quite calm. “If you’re so great, don’t buy them, don’t use them.”
“That won’t work,” Wen Yu said very seriously. “That way you’ll easily get an upset stomach.”
Their “don’t use them” had completely different meanings. Fu Yuhan’s face turned red and white in succession. Feeling his ears about to burn, he cursed in a low voice: “…You’re still more shameless. I lose.”
Joking aside, Wen Yu did note this matter. After hanging up, Fu Yuhan glanced at the still somewhat messy living room, found a cloth to wipe down the table, then went to change clothes.
“Stop playing, Xiao Lu,” he called to his little sister after changing. “Go change clothes. We’re getting ready to go out.”
“Coming!” Qin Xiaolu quickly abandoned the game console.
Fu Yuhan first went to the door to put on his shoes, standing there like a pole waiting for their “little princess,” his fingers tapping intermittently on the entryway doorframe. Suddenly his phone vibrated in his pocket again. Thinking it was Wen Yu, he pulled it out.
The caller ID made him freeze—
Fu Xuecheng.
“Hello?” He answered the call. “Dad.”
“Dad just remembered—school starts in a few days.” A familiar yet strange male voice came from the other end. “You’re starting freshman year this fall, right? Where are you going to school? What score did you get on the college entrance exam? Do you need to pay tuition? Do you have enough money?”
Fu Yuhan suddenly laughed.
Issues that used to bother him now seemed like nothing more than small talk he could laugh off. Fu Xuecheng hadn’t contacted him much this past half year. Unfortunately, his dad had a snitch—Zhou Xiangyan didn’t know what he was thinking, coming over every few days to report his parents’ movements to Fu Yuhan, loyal like a little lackey.
Things like there were problems at the company and Fu Xuecheng was overwhelmed, not coming home for ages. Or Zhou Ruoyan had severe pregnancy reactions, was irritable, and nagged at him as soon as she saw him, complaining much more than before.
Fu Xuecheng knew nothing about his biological son’s situation, yet conversely Fu Yuhan understood his father’s whereabouts quite well.
Although actually, he had no interest in knowing.
“In the capital, T University School of Architecture.” Fu Yuhan said briefly. “Tuition is already paid. I have enough money.”
Domestic first-tier universities all had state subsidies. The better the school, the lower the tuition. Although Fu Yuhan was in arts and his tuition was a few thousand yuan more than Wen Yu’s, it still wasn’t much money. Adding room and board, it wasn’t even as much as their two months’ rent.

I’ve always wanted a little sister 🥹 i’m glad they’re bonding more now and that He Yan is taking steps to gets better. Poor Uncle Qin, I hope he catches a break too
