CFHE Chapter 86

At Third High, all the senior year students knew one truth.

Fu-ge from Class 6, although he didn’t talk much, kept his word—

The final admission score for art students was calculated by combining professional and cultural scores in proportion. To get into T University, Fu Yuhan didn’t need to catch up to Wen Yu’s cultural score level, but he still entered a mode of studying day and night, growing like a mushroom at his desk.

Every morning when Wen Yu woke up, Fu Yuhan was reading in the living room. He even suspected that if not for going to school together, Fu Yuhan would leave first.

He was probably doing this for that phrase “come with me to the first exam room,” Wen Yu thought.

It was both sour and sweet.

Never before had anyone sacrificed so much for him, not even his loving birth mother.

His mother was a… woman with her own life, who loved fitness, shopping, and flower arranging. Her daily life was colorful, and correspondingly, she might have slightly neglected her son.

Fortunately, Wen Yu had a very “independent” nature and didn’t mind—perhaps he minded before age three, but he didn’t remember such early things.

But now, someone was throwing themselves into this so recklessly because of one sentence from him.

Very happy, but also a bit heartbroken, and would even get jealous of homework.

That last point was too pathological, so Wen Yu never mentioned it to Fu Yuhan, but he couldn’t help making little moves to disturb him when he was studying.

“You get up too early.” This morning, Wen Yu squinted as he came out of the room, naturally sitting on the sofa to hug Fu Yuhan, resting his head on his sharp-lined shoulder, mumbling with closed eyes, “Why don’t you sleep more… I can’t even touch you when I wake up.”

“Looking at vocabulary every morning so I don’t forget when the time comes.” Fu Yuhan moved his neck to let him lean more comfortably, “You won’t wear an eye mask to sleep, so I’m afraid if I turn on the light to read in the room, you won’t sleep well.”

“So why don’t you sleep more, you don’t need to rush like this…”

“I need to,” Fu Yuhan lowered his eyes to read, his face showing little expression but his demeanor gentle, “I wasted two years, so to catch up I need to spend double the time. It’s fair.”

“But I looked at the art student admission guidelines the other day, you really don’t need to be so…”

“I need to.” Fu Yuhan turned his head, placing an index finger on Wen Yu’s lips, “Yu-ge, I need to be able to stand beside you. If I don’t become a little better, I’ll feel… I’ll feel like I don’t deserve you.”

Love makes one feel ashamed of oneself.

The boyfriend of a study god cannot be a poor student.

His voice was soft, melting into the morning air like a feather brushing past the ear.

Slightly ticklish.

Wen Yu opened his eyes, opened his mouth to gently bite Fu Yuhan’s finger, then slowly licked around the fingertip.

Fu Yuhan suddenly pulled his hand back, as if electrocuted: “What are you doing? First thing in the morning!”

“Nothing,” Wen Yu lifted his head, one leg suddenly extending onto the sofa, half-kneeling as he leaned forward to kiss him, his voice murmuring between lips and teeth, “I love you…”

The vocabulary book in his hand slipped to the floor. His back lay down against the sofa, his palm feeling the warmth at the other’s waist, his breath filled entirely with another person’s scent.

Unknowingly, winter jasmine bloomed, willow branches sprouted, and the roadside cherry trees quietly budded; the morning air was moist and cool, but their tightly embracing bodies were warm.

The temperature in the living room seemed to be rising.

Until—

Creak—

“Ah, should I not be coming in at this time?” The man pushed open the small glass door on the second floor while carrying a tray.

Though he said this, he didn’t dodge or avoid, naturally placing the tray in his hands on the wooden table by the door, smiling: “I made some toast. You should eat before going to school.”

Wen Yu sighed, climbed off Fu Yuhan, and said helplessly: “Brother Lu, why did you have to get so enthusiastic about making breakfast today?”

Usually when they weren’t kissing passionately early in the morning, there was nothing to eat either.

“Because your Brother Chen got up early today saying he wanted breakfast.” The man pointed upstairs, looking innocent, “If you’re dissatisfied, you can find him.”

Wen Yu snorted: “I think he just can’t stand that I’m actually a top—Ah!”

The loose-tongued Wen Yu was kicked toward the bathroom by Fu Yuhan, whose face was about to burn up: “Top my ass, go brush your teeth!”

The man laughed heartily.

Fortunately, he had no interest in staying to enjoy the fun. After putting down breakfast, he quickly went upstairs to eat with Chen Feifan, which saved Fu Yuhan’s face from continuing to burn.

But when Wen Yu came out after washing up, he found his ear tips were still red and couldn’t help reaching out to touch them: “Why so shy?”

Fu Yuhan lowered his eyes to avoid his gaze: “Don’t you find it embarrassing? Being caught doing that kind of thing…”

“Doing what?” Wen Yu said matter-of-factly, “Our buttons are all still properly buttoned, okay?”

“…”

“Besides,” Wen Yu paused, pointing downstairs, “actually gay people are pretty open. When it’s operating downstairs, it’s not like no one secretly… ‘gets to home base’ in the bathroom. They’re probably used to it.”

“…”

Fu Yuhan was silent for three seconds: “Have you been downstairs?”

“I was underage before, they wouldn’t sell me alcohol, so they let me drink privately with Big Brother. So I haven’t really been, but I haven’t completely not been either.” Wen Yu said, “What else do you want to know? I’ll confess everything honestly.”

“…” The other’s overly frank attitude left Fu Yuhan helpless, and he smiled softly, “I’m not interrogating you.”

“It’s okay, I’m willing to let you interrogate me.” Wen Yu’s smile suddenly disappeared, reaching out to hold Fu Yuhan’s hand, thinking before saying, “Big Brother used to always say I was forcing myself—back then I smoked, drank, snuck into bars with others… I didn’t really like it that much, it was just…”

Just aimlessly opposing the world.

As he thought about it, his eyes suddenly curved slightly, grabbing Fu Yuhan’s hand to kiss it bit by bit, smiling as he said: “Interrogate me, please.”

“Weirdo.” Fu Yuhan looked at him.

“Do you like it?”

“Mm.”

His attitude was natural and casual, as if talking about the most ordinary thing.

So Wen Yu was happy again.

The two ate a simple breakfast together, changed clothes, and prepared to go to school.

Just before leaving, someone’s phone rang once.

To avoid calls from Wen Ziming, Wen Yu had recently gotten a new phone card that only a few people who contacted him regularly knew about—Fu Yuhan, Big Brother, Fourth Brother and a few others. Usually no one called him, so he instinctively looked toward Fu Yuhan.

“Hello?” Fu Yuhan answered the phone, “…I’m up, mm… today? …uh, probably not convenient, can Saturday work? …mm, no, it’s fine, I have a place to stay… okay, fine, Saturday then, I’ll contact you then.”

Wen Yu waited until he hung up to ask: “Who was it?”

“Uncle Qin.” Fu Yuhan said, “The house sold. He wants me to find time to pack up my things and move them to the house they’re temporarily renting.”

Wen Yu glanced at him.

Fu Yuhan lowered his eyes to look at the now-dark phone screen. The corners of his mouth were slightly upturned—not unhappy, but his gaze had a subtle distraction, as if lost in thought.

Wen Yu pondered for a moment, then reached out to touch the top of his head: “I’m here.”

“In all my years, you’re really the first person brave enough to touch my head.” Fu Yuhan lifted his eyelids and glanced at him lightly.

Wen Yu raised an eyebrow and vigorously ruffled his head twice: “So what?”

Fu Yuhan took a deep breath, looking ready to hit someone.

—Then he reached out and hugged him.

Fu Yuhan pressed his forehead against Wen Yu’s shoulder and said softly: “I don’t know… Yu-ge, I’m not very sad right now, but… there’s an indescribable feeling, like everything is ending, yet everything is beginning.”

“Mm,” Wen Yu hugged him back, “I understand. Even with things you don’t like, the time spent together can’t be ignored. This feeling might be… the same as when I burn all my old textbooks after every graduation.”

Fu Yuhan chuckled quietly: “You burn books?”

“Mm, find a fire basin and burn them page by page. It can take a whole evening. I always felt like my studying was forced by my dad, but every time I burned them, my feelings were actually very complex. I’d say it was… both satisfying and sad?” Wen Yu smiled, “So before, every time I thought about how long you and Yang Fan had known each other, I’d get upset.”

He knew Yang Fan was a good person, knew Yang Fan was completely straight, but—

But “I understand the logic, but I can’t do it.”

“…” Fu Yuhan was helpless, “You really can turn anything back to Yang Fan.”

“I’m just petty, you got a problem with that?” Wen Yu said, then changed direction, “But you’re so good to me… I’ve been working hard to control myself from getting randomly jealous.”

“How’s that going?”

“Minimal results.” Wen Yu said seriously, “I thought about it carefully and feel it’s related to sexual frustration. What do you think?”

Fu Yuhan elbowed him and broke free from his embrace: “I think if you’re sick, you should take medicine sooner rather than later.”

Moving things was a problem because they hadn’t dared go home recently, but Fu Yuhan wanted to put his personal belongings at Wen Yu’s place.

Or anywhere else would be fine—he just didn’t want to move to a rental house again.

When he moved away from Fu Xuecheng that year, the schedule was rushed and he left behind many toys and game consoles, losing most of his childhood pleasures, which he regretted for a long time.

But now, he wanted to actively abandon those old objects that had been stained with the dusty smell of time.

Old books could be sold, old clothes could be donated.

Outgrown limited edition shoes could be given away.

Bad old memories could be scattered out, aired under the sun—dust flying, and his heart would feel much better.

Wen Yu borrowed a mid-sized car from Chen Feifan and accompanied Fu Yuhan home on Saturday. They packed three boxes and then carefully transported them back to the home they hadn’t returned to in a long time. Today their luck was good—they didn’t see any existence resembling Wen Ziming’s informants. Wen Yu locked those three boxes in the small room, then left together with Fu Yuhan.

A few days later, T University’s school exam results came out, and Fu Yuhan passed the line.

Passing the line meant having the qualification to apply to T University, and he became even more focused on his studies.

As the college entrance exam approached day by day, the atmosphere in Class 6 was very different from before. The group of boys obsessed with basketball gradually stopped going out, gathering in a circle at the back of the classroom as soon as class ended.

Doing problems, discussing—their conversation topics changed from “new basketball shoes” to “freshly obtained real exam papers from XX province XX year.”

Time flowing like water pushed everyone forward.

It seemed like just a blink of an eye before the third mock exam began. Wen Yu got his wish to come to the fourth exam room together with Fu Yuhan.

The other class examinees around them were very real. The first question was “Holy shit, why are you here?” and the next question became “Can I copy your answers later?”

“Just put the test paper on the desk, we’ll look at it ourselves!” everyone said.

Wen Yu was noncommittal.

Although he couldn’t understand what there was to cheat on in such a simple exam, when he was at First High, other classmates had told him—”We poor students psychologically feel that having a top student sitting nearby during exams will help us rise to success. Saying this is just a ritual, we don’t actually need to see your answers, you understand?”

Wen Yu understood. Wen Yu said: “So you mean you want me not to lie down and sleep after finishing.”

The paper would be spread out there anyway.

Seemingly very open, but people without strabismus couldn’t see anything clearly.

Yes, exactly.

Everyone around was satisfied: “Thank you, study god, for saving our lives!”

Wen Yu rolled his eyes speechlessly, then saw Fu Yuhan smile at him almost imperceptibly through the crowd.

So he smiled too.

This was a relaxed and pleasant exam, for Wen Yu.

When he finished writing and put down his pen, there were still fifteen minutes left before the exam ended, but he wasn’t in a hurry to leave. His gaze lightly swept across Fu Yuhan’s profile as he looked back at the wall clock.

He was thinking.

He was calculating.

He was checking.

No need to sit in the exam room wildly guessing—he was right there not far away.

Wen Yu was very satisfied.

“Finished?” The proctor walked to his side and said quietly, “Don’t rush, check it over carefully.”

“Already checked.” Wen Yu glanced at the wall clock.

“No matter how much you look at the time, there’s still that much left.” The teacher said, “Being anxious won’t help.”

Wen Yu smiled and still maintained his habit of looking back at the clock every two minutes, his peripheral vision falling on a beautifully lined neck.

The proctor just thought he wouldn’t listen to advice, shook his head, and walked back to the podium.

The third mock exam followed the college entrance exam schedule and lasted two days. When the exam ended, Fu Yuhan lowered his eyes to pack his things, his calm face showing some fatigue.

“Tired?” Wen Yu walked to his side and bent down to look at his face.

“Mm,” Fu Yuhan took a breath, “I want to go out and have some meat.”

“…When you say it like that, it’s easy for me to misunderstand.” Wen Yu was speechless.

Fu Yuhan was even more speechless: “…I want to eat meat, actual meat.”

“Okay okay okay, let’s go, my treat.”

“I’ll pay? I just got my salary from Fourth Brother.” Fu Yuhan paused, “Do you still have money? Didn’t your dad cut off your funding?”

“I have some saved from before, and…” Wen Yu twitched his mouth, his expression somewhat strange, “This morning Aunt Fang transferred me two thousand yuan. I forgot to ask her about it during the exam.”

“You can ask now.” Fu Yuhan stood up, “Let’s eat first, we’ll discuss who pays later.”

“Okay.”

Fang Wanjing seemed very busy.

Wen Yu called her on WeChat, dialing five or six times before one was manually hung up. Less than a minute later, she sent a message saying it wasn’t convenient to answer now.

Fang Wanjing: Is there something you need?

Wen Yu: I was taking exams during the day and just saw you transferred money to me.

This message sank without a trace. It wasn’t until half an hour later, when Wen Yu and Fu Yuhan had eaten most of their dinner, that he received a reply.

Fang Wanjing: Xiao Yu, Auntie is fighting a divorce lawsuit with your dad. Regardless of the final outcome, it probably won’t have anything to do with you anymore. But Auntie has always regarded you as a son, so please consider that money as… as a small gift from a kind elder.

Wen Yu: “…”

“What’s wrong?” Fu Yuhan keenly noticed his expression was off.

Wen Yu didn’t speak, handing his phone over for him to see.

“I suddenly feel very sorry for her.” Wen Yu pressed his lips together, “I’m really not a good… ‘son.'”

“Actually, it’s not too late to start learning now… if you want to.” Fu Yuhan lowered his eyes and said quietly, “Yu-ge, I think family affection isn’t entirely maintained by blood relations.”

Fu Yuhan’s closest family member at home was Qin Xiaolu, and they only shared half their bloodline.

As for Wen Yu…

“Even if they divorce, it doesn’t matter. You can still recognize her as your godmother,” Fu Yuhan said, “as long as you both want to.”

Wen Yu didn’t answer.

Divorce lawsuits weren’t easy to fight and could drag on for half a year or a year. Before that, he just wanted to focus all his energy on the college entrance exam.

In the end, he only replied with a brief sentence.

Wen Yu: Thank you, Aunt Fang.

The weather got warmer day by day, and the sun rose higher each day.

In the last week before the college entrance exam, the school would give all students a holiday, but before this review break, there were two things to do.

The first was the “College Entrance Exam Mobilization Assembly,” inviting all senior year students and parents to attend, held in the school’s main auditorium.

The second was a thorough cleaning.

Fu Yuhan’s situation was special. He argued with his homeroom teacher for two days, requesting to participate in the mobilization assembly himself. As for Wen Yu… he had originally planned to do the same, but unexpectedly, Fang Wanjing contacted him first.

“I don’t mean anything by it,” on the phone, Fang Wanjing’s tone was still as cautious as before, “I just think for this kind of activity… there should be a parent present no matter what. The college entrance exam is a big deal after all.”

Wen Yu didn’t speak.

“If you really can’t accept it, forget it… should I plead with the teacher for you?” she asked.

“No, you come.” Wen Yu bit his lip, reaching out to hold Fu Yuhan’s hand as he watched him from beside, saying softly, “Thank you… Mom.”

Fu Yuhan squeezed his hand back.

After he hung up, Fu Yuhan chuckled softly: “See, spring brings warmth and flowers bloom.”

“It’s already summer.” Wen Yu’s calm face showed a relieved ease, “Come on, let’s go back to the classroom for cleaning. If we slack off any more, Ge Ran will scold us.”

“She won’t scold anyone.” Fu Yuhan smiled.

“Don’t speak well of her. In my book, she’s a ‘love rival.'” Wen Yu pointed at him, “Let’s finish the work assigned to us early, then we can slack off.”

Fu Yuhan made an “mm” sound: “Then I want to go to another place.”

“Where?”

Two hours later, the empty building.

At four in the afternoon, the sun was no longer as glaring as at noon. The golden light seemed glazed, fluffy and tinged with orange.

Fu Yuhan walked into the empty building with his hands in his pockets, leisurely making his way to the window with practiced ease, propping himself up to sit on it.

He rested his legs on the window frame, turned his head to look at Wen Yu, and directed his movement: “A little more to the left, face me… no, too far, one small step to the right… no, too much… good, just like that.”

Fu Yuhan took out his phone, opened the camera and aimed it at him, adjusting the lens position and shooting parameters.

“Good, now lower your head, then look up at me.”

Wen Yu did as he said, his whole body bathed in the sunlight streaming in from the other side of the empty building.

There was a “click” sound—

“Done.” Fu Yuhan smiled with satisfaction and put away his phone, “On your first afternoon at Third High, it was just like this. I was sitting in this position, and you walked in from outside. Yu-ge—”

He beckoned to him.

Wen Yu walked over.

“This might be some kind of sign,” Fu Yuhan lowered his eyes and took his hand, his gaze vaguely nostalgic, “Yu-ge, you walked into my life carrying light.”

“Do you know what I was thinking that day?” Wen Yu suddenly asked.

“What?”

“I was thinking this person is really pretentious, but so interesting.” Wen Yu stood there, leaning his upper body forward to gently kiss Fu Yuhan on the windowsill, “If he could make my senior year life a little more interesting, I wouldn’t have transferred schools for nothing.”

Later he discovered it was more than just interesting.

His life, silent and dull like a black and white film, thus gained sound and color.

“What are you two doing?!”

A sudden uncertain roar came from not far away. Fu Yuhan, as a seasoned school bully fighting on the frontlines of rule-breaking, could identify the person by voice without turning around.

It was Director Yao!

That bald head from the student affairs office!

How was he here! Why wasn’t he checking on the senior year cleaning!

“Yu-ge, come up.” After their lips parted, Fu Yuhan used force to pull the person up. Wen Yu reacted quickly and jumped onto the windowsill: “Shit, Old Yao!”

“It’s fine, jump.” Fu Yuhan kicked off with his long legs and landed on the playground, seeing the shocked bald old man on the rubber track from his peripheral vision.

He grabbed Wen Yu’s hand and took off with his long legs: “Run!”

“Fu Yuhan! Wen Yu! What were you just doing?!”

Director Yao’s furious roar came from behind. Fu Yuhan ran while shouting back loudly: “Nothing at all! You didn’t see anything—”

Whether it was puppy love, homosexuality, or slacking off during cleaning.

With just a few days until the college entrance exam, who would still use those rigid “rules and regulations” to cause trouble for people?

At the end of May, wind carrying some restlessness blew past, lifting the fluttering hems of the young people’s school uniforms.

Young lives running under the sunlight.

Together with their unrestrained love.

Author’s Note: Main story complete

Since this is a campus story, the main text ends here. The subsequent story will be written as extras, probably tens of thousands more words, so don’t worry. I keep seeing everyone imagining the plot developments and giving themselves knives, which makes me feel helpless, since I have no intention of giving out knives… Anyway, the extras are all sweet daily life, so don’t worry anymore.

I said I’d update at 6 PM earlier, but today’s chapter was delayed because I got stuck on the ending. Although I didn’t miss an update, I still plan to follow through on what I said when going premium and cut off my d*ck (not really). This chapter’s comment section will drop 100 red packets, thanks to everyone for working hard to follow the serial.

Bow.

AHHHHH I LOVE IT SO MUCH. Thank you for translating the novel so well 🫶🫶

I finished this in one day, lol. Excited to see what the extras are and what’s in store for our two cuties.

  2. cynicalreader says:

lmfao poor Old Yao, kinda fitting this is how the main story ends !

that was a wonderful read 🥹 for the sake of keeping my job ill wait until the weekend to finish the extras LOL

I’m so happy with this pairing, there’s always something so bittersweet about romance and coming of age stories. The process of finding yourself still resonates with me to this day because it’s still so difficult to understand the path I want to take; that’s probably why these stories always make me feel happy and sad.

thank u so much for the wonderful translations! It was so fun reading about Fu Yuhan and Wen Yu’s journey, can’t wait to read the extras 💗

  3. teabag says:
