“A favor?”
“Yeah.”
“Yes, I’ll do it.”
“But it’s bad to promise to do something without knowing what it is.”
Director Yeon cupped both cheeks with one hand, eyes crinkling at the corners as Jung Heeyeon answered with an innocent expression.
“Pardon? It’s okay if it’s from you, Director. You’ve never asked me to do anything bad.”
If he said he had planned to make the omega cry in bed, Jung Heeyeon wouldn’t be saying that so easily. Director Yeon pressed a soft kiss to those tender cheeks, hiding the sharpness in his eyes. He’d need to fix Jung Heeyeon’s habit of blindly agreeing to anything he said.
“Hmm. You’ll really do it?”
“Yes. What is it?”
“While I’m gone, you can’t cheat on me.”
“Pardon? Cheat?”
Jung Heeyeon furrowed his brows, looking deeply serious.
“I won’t cheat.”
“Then why did you turn down when I asked if you wanted to hold hands earlier?”
Purposefully putting on an upset voice, Director Yeon pretended to sulk. The omega’s sweet face immediately showed panic, Jung Heeyeon clearly hadn’t caught on that it was meant as teasing.
“It’s not because I don’t like you, Director.”
“It’s not?”
“Yes.”
Jung Heeyeon fidgeted with his fingers. They’d be apart for a few days, and he didn’t want Director Yeon getting the wrong idea.
“My hands were cold from being nervous earlier. And if I held your hand, yours would get cold too. That’s why I said no…”
The unexpected answer made the alpha’s expression still for a beat. To Director Yeon, Jung Heeyeon’s body temperature didn’t matter. Warm or cold, it was Jung Heeyeon’s body temperature. That was all that mattered. Why was his baby being so unbearably sweet?
“Haaa…”
The man pulled Jung Heeyeon tightly into his arms, burying his nose into the crook of the omega’s neck. As he inhaled deeply, a faint scent of gardenia filled his lungs—warm and soft, a smell that didn’t quite suit winter.
“When I said I wanted to hold your hand, why did you give it to me?”
He whispered with a hint of laughter still in his voice, nose still nestled in Jung Heeyeon’s neck. The small body in his arms wriggled gently.
“Because you said you wanted to. I’ll do anything you ask, Director…”
“You’re so goddamn adorable, I swear.”
Leaving behind such a sweet, affectionate lover left a bitter taste in his mouth. Maybe he shouldn’t do what Kang Seoui wanted and just get himself out quickly. The man was calculating the fastest way to get released when a knock sounded on the door.
“I should go downstairs now.”
Director Yeon pressed a short kiss to the pale neck before finally letting Jung Heeyeon go. The absence of his warmth left a hollow sensation as the small body slid off his lap.
“Come in.”
The first to appear through the open door was Kim Chulwoo.
“Sir, the guests have arrived.”
Director Yeon turned his body slightly, shielding his face from Jung Heeyeon’s view. A few familiar faces stepped into the office.
“Director Yeon Woobeom?”
The man at the front held up his police badge hanging around his neck.
“Yeon Woobeom, you are under arrest for the illegal trafficking of firearms.”
The detective, dressed in jeans and a jumper, strode toward the sofa, a trail of others following behind him.
“We’re making an emergency arrest due to flight risk. Emergency arrests don’t require a warrant, so don’t bother asking.”
Still seated, Director Yeon parted his lips calmly before the detectives had gotten close enough to notice Jung Heeyeon’s presence.
“Let’s talk for a second.”
“Director.”
The guy at the front looked visibly uncomfortable.
“Have a seat, Detective Lee.”
The voice was slow, languid, but heavy enough to smother the tension in the air.
“Do I…”
Director Yeon tapped the tip of his foot. His sharply tailored suit and black leather shoes turned even that minor gesture into something looking dangerous.
“Do I have to tell you twice to sit down…?”
It was a threat, delivered almost gently.
Detective Lee Seungjun roughly raked a hand through his hair and waved his colleagues off. At his vague gesture to leave, the junior detectives hesitated before quietly retreating. They had all benefited from the big fallout together, so none of them could really complain.
“Director Yeon, could you please try to separate business from personal matters? You can’t just act like we know each other in situations like this.”
“They all looked like familiar faces to me.”
Director Yeon’s answer was impossibly relaxed. Lee Seungjun let out a sigh deep enough to sink into the floor. Seeing that Director Yeon gestured toward the sofa again, he reluctantly began to take his steps. No matter how long he had worn a badge, dealing with a dominant alpha always put him on edge.
“Ah, that surprised me.”
As soon as he sat on the luxurious sofa, Lee Seungjun was startled, clutching his chest at the sight of an unexpected existence of another person. He had assumed Director Yeon would be alone.
He hadn’t noticed anyone else when he entered. Most likely, this person had been completely obscured by the alpha’s overwhelming size. Or perhaps that man had deliberately concealed his presence.
As their eyes met, the person in question gave a polite bow.
“Hello.”
This person was clearly an omega, and a strikingly beautiful one at that. Lee Seungjun awkwardly bowed his head in return. In all his years as a detective, this was probably the first time someone greeted him with such impeccable manners.
“Hello to you, too. I didn’t realize there was a guest.”
Jung Heeyeon stared fixedly at the badge hanging around the man’s neck. Below the ID photo were three neatly printed characters of his name.
“Heeyeon. What are you looking at his name for? It’s not like you’ll ever see him again.”
Noticing the intent behind that gaze, Director Yeon tapped Jung Heeyeon’s cheek gently and whispered. It was a subtle, deliberate move to redirect the omega’s attention from another alpha.
“Oh, but still…”
“It’s fine not to know his name. There will be no occasion for you to ever see him again.”
“I see. Then I won’t look.”
Once Jung Heeyeon’s attention had fully turned away, Director Yeon finally shifted his gaze back to Lee Seungjun. His demeanor, even while facing an emergency arrest in front of a detective, remained excessively composed.
“You’ll be applying for a detention warrant within 48 hours, right?”
“Yes, well, that’s the protocol. Do you know who the assigned prosecutor is?”
“Of course I do.”
It was a prosecutor with connections on Sunha’s side.
“Though I’m not sure whether they plan to use the full 48 hours or move fast.”
“If it’s Prosecutor Seo… he’ll probably want to push things quickly. But for an investigation, he’ll need a detention warrant. So I would say he’ll move fast.”
Director Yeon’s plan was to delay things by undergoing formal investigation after being taken into custody.
Preparations to corner Sunha Group and force Chairman Jung out had been finished long ago, but taking down Kang Seohyo at the same time required slight changes to the plan. Still, if Kang Seoui, an insider at Seonha, worked his ass off hard enough, wrapping things up within 48 hours wasn’t entirely out of the question.
Director Yeon glanced sidelong at the omega sitting beside him. The way he kept fidgeting with his fingers nonstop made it obvious he was nervous. It would be better to take things slow, but with his lover this anxious, there was no choice but to act quickly.
“I guess I’ll have to tell Executive Director Kang to bust his ass. Alright.”
“…Then, may I get up now?”
“Did I stop you?”
Lee Seungjun rose slowly from his seat. They needed to move quickly, but Director Yeon didn’t seem remotely inclined to budge. It wasn’t like he could drag the man out by force, nor did he have the will to do so. The whole situation was frustrating beyond belief.
“Director. Let’s just get this over with quickly. I’ve heard everything from the higher ups too.”
“Heard what?”
“That you engineered this whole thing on purpose. We’ve come this far, so let’s go quickly. You know the others are waiting outside.”
“You can wait for another five minutes.”
Director Yeon narrowed his eyes as he felt Jung Heeyeon’s hand brush against his suit jacket.
“Haaa… Sir, we’ll be troubled if you keep—”
“I said I’ll walk out on my own in five minutes.”
“…I’ll give you exactly five minutes.”
Lee Seungjun tapped his wristwatch a few times, then strode toward the door and yanked it open. “Is there not even instant coffee in this place?” he muttered, the comment fading as he stepped out the room.
