Chu Feiliang was about to leave when she was called back.
There was a rather important interview manuscript that needed a second round of proofreading. The deadline was tight, so Yan Congxue had to brace herself and bring it over.
Working overtime anytime, anywhere was a common occurrence for her. In this line of work, it was rare to have a fixed schedule.
In her early years, Chu Feiliang had once been on a show where the recording was forcibly delayed. After having to re-record, she threw a fit, said she was going home to sleep, and left. She had mellowed out a lot in the past two years, and recently she was so zen she was like a Maitreya Buddha who never got angry.
“Bring it here.” Chu Feiliang held out her hand, glanced at the six or seven-page manuscript, and said, “Have you connected with them? How long will it take?”
“About an hour.” Yan Congxue looked at the schedule they had sent over. “It won’t delay your lunch.”
“But it will delay me from going home to cook with my girlfriend.” Chu Feiliang pouted, muttering as she took out her phone, “It’s depriving me of the fun of being her assistant.”
Yan Congxue fell silent for a moment upon hearing this.
Then she looked at the displeased Chu Feiliang in the mirror and said expressionlessly, “Is it depriving you of the fun of being her assistant, or depriving you of the fun of getting your hands on her…”
Chu Feiliang glanced back at her, a smile spreading across her face, “Is there a difference?”
That smile was asking for a punch.
So thought Chu Siyue as she stepped out of the elevator.
Yan Congxue saw Chu Siyue too. After a greeting, she said, “Chinese culture is vast and profound.”
“Isn’t it just.” Chu Feiliang chuckled softly and handed the keys in her hand to Chu Siyue, saying, “Help me pick up Chacha this afternoon—and on the way, swing by my place to get Rong Guang. We’ll all go home to eat together.”
Chu Siyue took the keys and calmly agreed.
She was the one who had accepted the job for Chu Feiliang, so it was only right that she handle the “after-sales service.”
It was just that on the way to pick up Chacha, Zhang Nanchuan unexpectedly joined them.
Zhang Nanchuan casually got into the car, rubbed his newly shaved head, and grinned roguishly. “Boss, let me freeload a meal this afternoon. I haven’t had any work lately, and I’m sick of eating takeout at home.”
Chu Siyue glanced at him, a slight smile on her lips, but didn’t expose him. His wife was also invited to the Chu residence for dinner today. It would be lively with more people. Chu Feiliang had also intended for Rong Guang to meet everyone, which was why she had agreed to return to the company and have Chu Siyue bring Rong Guang over as well.
In another sense… this could be considered a formal, public introduction of Rong Guang’s existence.
“What’s that in the car?” Chu Siyue glanced back.
Zhang Nanchuan had stuffed a bunch of things in there. It looked like a pile of prop knives and spears.
“Props.” Zhang Nanchuan stretched his arms, looked around, and said, “This doesn’t look like a school. That little girl Chacha studies here? No way, you guys are too cruel. At least get her into a better school…”
Chu Siyue turned the corner, her expression blank. “Are you blind?”
Zhang Nanchuan slowly saw the dilapidated sign on top of the old campus building and shut his mouth.
Then he rubbed his nose sheepishly. “Ah, my alma mater. I didn’t notice. It’s become a condemned building after all these decades.”
Chu Siyue got out of the car.
Zhang Nanchuan didn’t get out; he waited in the car.
He watched Chu Siyue go upstairs, took out his phone to handle some matters, and thought to himself that when that little girl Chacha came out, he really needed to have a good talk with Rong Guang about the child’s education.
Such a huge, condemned building, letting a little girl like Chacha run around in it all day. What if something really happened one day?
After finishing his business, Zhang Nanchuan felt a bit curious and also a strange sense of nostalgia for his alma mater. He craned his neck to look out the front window, examining the old campus, which was now clearly riddled with decay.
When he was still a student, the century-old school already had problems like cracked walls and peeling paint.
Now, because it was completely deserted, the surrounding area had been sealed off. An old guard was left to watch the gate. The students knew it was a condemned building, so no one dared to come over; most of them played on the back field.
The car window was suddenly hit by something falling.
Zhang Nanchuan looked closely and saw it was a piece of crumbled earth and a few small stones.
Fortunately, Chu Siyue’s car was of high quality, and the glass was completely fine. Nevertheless, Zhang Nanchuan let out a “Hey!” and scrambled out of the car. “Which little brat—”
Just as his curses trailed off, he heard the sound of clubs hitting something, mixed with the voices of men and women, coming from the top floor. At the same time, the clamor from upstairs finally broke through all barriers and reached his ears.
Zhang Nanchuan froze. He heard Chu Siyue’s particularly familiar voice and her nearly broken scream, “Chacha—!”
Three people fell from the building.
Even though Zhang Nanchuan reacted extremely quickly, and had even trained specifically for years, with his strength, he could only catch the one closest to him.
‘Thud!’
‘Thud!’
Two dull, heavy thuds sounded. Zhang Nanchuan looked at the adult man twitching on the ground on one side, and the two little girls with their clothes in disarray, clearly having been through a struggle. How could he not know what had just happened?!
In that instant, his expression became ferocious and terrifying.
The person he caught was Li Mingming.
With Zhang Nanchuan to break her fall, and the soft grass below, Li Mingming was still conscious, aside from the piercing pain in her arms and legs.
In a flash, she recovered from the lingering fear, frantically clutching Zhang Nanchuan’s sleeve, her face pale. “Where’s Chacha—where’s Chacha?”
Chacha had landed squarely on Chu Siyue’s car.
When Chu Siyue came down, she was clearly in a complete panic. She had lost a high-heeled shoe but had no time to care. She practically tumbled down the stairs and looked towards her flashy, bright red sports car.
She had always loved red, so passionate and rich, but she never thought that one day, this shade of red would be so glaring.
“She’s unconscious—” Chu Siyue lunged forward, instinctively placing her hand on Chacha’s carotid artery.
The pulse was still strong, but Chacha was unconscious. There was a large pool of blood behind her head, and her arms and knees were twisted at angles the human body could hardly achieve.
Her expression changed slightly.
Zhang Nanchuan placed Li Mingming to the side.
Li Mingming endured the pain, crying out, “Chacha called the police, call 120, she called the police, quick, call 120…”
As her words fell, the deafening sound of police sirens and the wail of an ambulance immediately echoed through the old school campus.
The three were all put into the ambulance and taken away. Chu Siyue and Zhang Nanchuan went with them. Li Mingming was still conscious, and with her last bit of strength before passing out, she briefly explained what happened and said that Chacha had placed a camera upstairs and everything had been recorded.
After saying that last sentence, Li Mingming finally fainted.
When the doctor was splinting her arms and legs, they finally discovered that Li Mingming’s body was covered in bruises. In particular, her wrists and ankles had fresh splinters from hemp rope that had just been embedded, standing upright on the surface of her skin. Some of the deeper ones had even drawn blood.
As a nurse with many years of experience, she couldn’t help but look at Li Mingming with a trace more sympathy.
A group of people gathered at the entrance to the operating room.
The moment Chu Feiliang heard the news, she dropped everything and drove home to bring Rong Guang to the hospital. Chu Siyue hadn’t told Rong Guang directly, choosing to inform Chu Feiliang first.
Rong Guang had mentally prepared herself countless times on the way, but when she learned that Chacha was in a serious enough condition to be in surgery, her hands and feet still went cold with anger.
With trembling hands, she signed the family consent form.
“What on earth happened?” Rong Guang’s voice was hoarse, her eyes bloodshot and filled with guilt and self-blame.
Chu Feiliang and Chu Siyue exchanged a look. Finally, Chu Siyue stood up from the floor and said, “When Tiantian was about to leave, the company assigned her something urgent, so she asked me to pick up Chacha—Rong Guang…”
Rong Guang lifted her eyes, her heart still in a state of panic.
But she kept clutching Chu Feiliang’s hand, never letting go.
“Who is Li Chacha’s family?” A person in a police uniform walked over holding a file.
Rong Guang looked up, walked over, and said, “I am.”
“There are some things we need to inform you about. Please come with us.” The person who came was a female police officer with a kind face. She patted Rong Guang’s shoulder.
That light pat on the shoulder almost made Rong Guang’s knees buckle and send her to the ground. Dragging her heavy feet, she was just about to leave when the doors to the operating room behind her swished open.
“There’s not enough blood in the blood bank! We’re contacting volunteers, but there’s no time! Where is Li Chacha’s family? The patient needs an urgent blood transfusion!” The nurse’s face was anxious, and she held a requisition form in her hand.
Rong Guang’s face turned pale. “I’m type AB—Chacha is type O. Our blood types are different…”
Chacha had no other relatives.
Chu Feiliang froze, then instinctively took a step forward. “I’m type O.”
Needless to say, Chu Siyue was also type O. She stood up in concert and even started rolling up her sleeves.
The nurse frowned, her expression turning serious. “She has the very rare panda blood. The blood type must be a match. The amount she needs cannot be met by regular type O blood. Where is her family? Are there any direct relatives?”
“Panda blood?” Zhang Nanchuan’s voice slowly sounded, a little hesitant. “My ex-wife is RH-negative, also type O… I… I’ll give her a call.”
“No need to call. I’m here.” A woman’s voice sounded from around the corner. Rong Guang and the others looked up and saw a woman in a long trench coat, dressed crisply and neatly, helping Grandma Chu walk over.
Zhang Nanchuan looked at her, nervously wringing his hands. He subconsciously touched his bald head and stood closer to the wall.
The newcomer didn’t look at him. She walked straight forward a couple of steps to the nurse and said, “I’m RH-negative, type O. Let’s go.”
The nurse had no time to waste and hurriedly led her away.
